However, many eye diseases can affect the connection between the retina and the brain, causes problems in our vision.

One of the most serious eye conditions that leads to decreased vision in older patients and oftentimes blindness, is age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the central retina, the macula. The macula is responsible for central vision, which is vital for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Macular degeneration may be manifest by symptoms such as blurriness, dark areas in central vision, distortion of central vision, and permanent loss of central vision. Ordinarily, a patient of Brook Plaza Ophthalmology will not experience peripheral vision loss if they have macular degeneration. Individuals over the age of sixty are at risk for macular degeneration, but it can appear as early as forty.

There are two types of macular degeneration, wet and dry macular degeneration. Wet age-related macular degeneration can be treated with laser eye surgery, photodynamic therapy and injections into the eye. Unfortunately, these treatments are not a cure for macular degeneration. However, early treatment of dry macular degeneration can delay and possibly prevent the disease from progressing to an advanced stage, in which vision loss occurs.
