Diabetes can cause vision problems since the patient with diabetes may have consistently higher levels of sugar in their bloodstream. There are several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy which include keeping your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible, and keeping your blood pressure as close to normal as possible. The eye disease that people with diabetes are prone to developing is called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is actually a collection of several different eye diseases that are related to the health of the blood vessels that surrounded and nourish the retina. In diabetic retinopathy, these blood vessels can begin to leak blood and other fluids into the eyes which can have a poor effect on your vision. Additionally, new blood vessels can begin to grow over the retina, leak blood, and cause scarring which can lead to permanent vision loss. Our eye doctor will provide you with a complete vision exam which includes a dilated eye exam to determine the health of the retina. If problems with diabetic retinopathy are found there are several treatment options available, including laser eye treatment. The important thing is to keep a close watch on eyes that are developing diabetic retinopathy.
